I began the Navigating Cyberloss blog in November 2010, following the death of a very dear friend in April 2007. The ‘difference’ is that mine and Chris’ friendship was entirely online, which led to a very different experience of grief.
Mourning the loss of an online friend brings specific challenges, the most significant of which is accepting the reality that this person you ‘only’ knew through words on a screen, or perhaps a picture or two, is actually gone. There can be archives of emails or instant message conversations which eventually bring comfort, but at first these can cause more pain.
I eventually came to the conclusion that I could not possibly be the only person to have experienced such loss, and so Navigating Cyberloss was born. It was a slow start, but the blog reached 10,000 views in mid-August.
It’s been quite a journey. However, it’s been more than worth it to provide support and community for people who have experienced this form of loss. It is my hope that people will one day come to recognise the value of online friendship, and realise that it truly doesn’t matter how we meet, only that we do. Once we have, our lives are forever altered.

That comment gets to the heart of it. Not many people know how to broach this subject…and I think that’s a real shame. We have established customs with other losses, cyberloss should be just the same.
